Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be a waitress or cleaner to help them be able to survive. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She left school after two years, to go into acting. The route she took did not come without challenges. While in New York, her first task was to pose stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. The company paid her performing during the daytime as an usherette. She received a master's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
